Custom Website vs Squarespace for Service Businesses

Squarespace makes the best-looking templates in the builder world, and I am not going to pretend otherwise — if I were a photographer or a wedding planner, I would probably be a customer instead of a competitor. But I build sites for plumbers, HVAC companies, and roofers, and a beautiful portfolio grid does not answer a "water heater leaking" search at 9pm. That search goes to whoever ranks in the map pack and loads first on a phone, and those are exactly the two places Squarespace gives up ground: mobile pages that take 2–4 seconds to render, and schema support that stops well short of what local search rewards. This comparison covers where the polish ends and the rankings start.

TL;DR

The Verdict

If you sell with your eyes — portfolios, studios, restaurants — Squarespace is a defensible pick at $16–$49 a month, and it will have you live in days. For a service business that lives on local search, the 2–4 second mobile loads and thin structured-data support are a ceiling: fine in a quiet market, a real handicap in a contested one. My builds take 2–4 weeks instead of a weekend. The extra time goes into sub-second loads and full local schema, which is the part of a website Google actually reads.

Common Questions

FAQs

It can hold a nice-looking brochure, and if that is all you need, it is a reasonable $16–$49 a month. The problem is that plumbing and HVAC leads come from urgent local searches on phones, and winning those takes sub-second loads, LocalBusiness and Service schema, and a genuine page per town — three things Squarespace either limits or does not support. I have yet to see a template gallery close a burst-pipe call.

For a service business, a custom build is the strongest alternative — that is what I sell, so weigh the claim, but the numbers are checkable: sub-second loads against 2–4 seconds, full structured data against basic fields, and code you own against a platform you rent. If you want to stay on a builder, Webflow is the most capable of them, with cleaner output and better SEO control than Squarespace.

Partially. You get the basics — title tags, meta descriptions, clean URLs — and for a business with little local competition that can be enough. What it lacks is the rest of the local stack: full schema markup, a workable page-per-town structure, and the mobile speed the map pack rewards. In a market where several contractors are fighting for three map-pack slots, the basics do not win.

A Squarespace site can be live in a few days, and I will not pretend that speed does not matter — sometimes it is the right call. My builds typically take 2–4 weeks. The extra time goes into performance work, schema, and per-town pages: on my shipped builds that shows up as Lighthouse scores of 99–100 and mobile loads around 0.7 seconds, which is the gap a template cannot close no matter how good it looks.
